Pollution in the El Yunque Rainforest
The pollution in the El Yunque rainforest is a major part of the destruction of the forest. There are many different types of pollution which result in an overall downfall in the biome.
Where is the pollution mainly coming from?
The pollution is mainly from tourists who visit El Yunque.
Increased human interactions present the problem of maintaining the quality of the bodies of water. Due to the rise in tourism, there has suddenly been a need for developing ways to test the river water. As the amount of tourists increase each year, it is becoming harder and harder to keep the ecosystem from falling apart

To decrease the amount of pollution from tourists, the following are currently being constrained by the Wilderness Management Area:
- No road construction or other development
- No motorized use
- No mechanic use
- No timber harvesting
- No water development
- No mineral activity
- Standards for trail construction
- Recreation management for low use
Some of the areas where the above constraints are currently being taken are:
- River of Mameyes
- Rio De La Mina
- Rio Icacos
Some rivers that need to constantly be maintained for water quality are the more common rivers, such as:
- La Mina River (La Mina Waterfall)
- Icacos River
- Mameyes River
Where else is the pollution coming from?
Another place that the pollution is coming from is the atmosphere.
Global warming plays an important role on the food and water availability in the rainforest. With a lesser amount of water each year, the lakes and rivers can eventually dry up, leaving no more natural sources of water. When the amount of water begins to dwindle, then the food supply can become scarce.
